Original document release

When the system time or time zone are changed in the ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) on an HP ProLiant Gen9-series server or HP ProLiant DL580 Gen8 Server running a Microsoft Windows Server Operating System (OS), upon reboot, the system time may default to the OS time-zone offset.

SCOPE

Any of the following HPE ProLiant servers running any version of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 or 2012:

  • All ProLiant DL/ML Series Gen9 servers
  • HPE ProLiant XL230a Gen9
  • HPE ProLiant m350 server cartridge
  • HPE ProLiant m710x server cartridge
  • HPE ProLiant m510 server cartridge
  • HPE Moonshot 1500 Configure-to-order Chassis with Optional OS

RESOLUTION

System ROM versions beginning with version 1.50 contain a ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) option that can be used to prevent this issue from occurring. This Date and Time BIOS/Platform Configuration option configures the time format and controls how the system date and time is stored in the Real Time Clock and presented to the OS.

By default, the time is formatted for Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). This format can be changed to Local Time, which removes the use of the time zone. This setting can be used to work around interaction issues between the server and Windows Operating Systems running in Legacy boot mode, which can result in an incorrect system time.

Perform the following to obtain the latest available version of the System ROM. This process is the same for all of the servers listed in the Scope section above:

Click the following link: https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/home

b. Enter a product name (e.g., "ML350 Gen9") in the text search field and wait for a list of products to populate. From the products displayed, identify the desired product and click on the Drivers & software icon to the right of the product.

c. From the Drivers & software dropdown menus on the left side of the page:

d. Select the Software Type - (For the System ROM- e.g. BIOS (Entitlement Required))

e. Select the Software Sub Type - (e.g. System ROM)

f. For further filtering if needed - Select the specific Operating System from the Operating Environment.

g. Select the System ROM Version 1.50 (or later) Note: To ensure the latest version will be downloaded, click on the Revision History tab to check if a new version of the firmware/driver is available.

Alternately, as a temporary workaround, perform the following operations when booting in Legacy boot mode:

1) Create a new DWORD sized Microsoft Windows registry setting named RealTimeIsUniversal under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation\ and set the value to '1'. This option will cause the Windows operating system to treat the Real Time Clock time as UTC rather than local time.

OR

2) Use Network Time Protocol (NTP) service. For more information regarding Windows Time Service Configuration, visit the following URL:

Windows Time Service Technical Reference at Microsoft.com

CAUTION: This document contains information about how to modify the registry. Use the Registry Editor at your own risk! The registry should be backed up before modifying it. If the Registry Editor is used incorrectly, serious issues could occur that may require a reinstallation of the operating system.
